Guys,

I would strongly advise a respirator to be used when spraying any kind of paint. Sundstrom make good ones.

I 2 packed my rodeo last year for around $750... looks great, even better after I colour sanded and buffed it.

About to get paint for the Datsun now.... wouldn't even consider enamel. Acrylic has it's merits but Im going for 2K again, it's just so durable and shiny.

you don't need to put any extra effort to wax your car every wash.. Just use a good quality "wash and wax" shampoo?? I also buff my cars once a year and clay them regularly to maintain their looks.

Cheers

Ed

I went for Acrylic and clear over the top for the simple fact that I was doing it myself and did not want to buy a respirator. 2-Pack is poisonous. As it was I still bought and used a 'professional' mask.

I would have loved to have 2 pack but could not afford the price someone else would charge for the right job

the 2k i used is applied the same as acrylic, only differnece being is that it shouldnt really be done outside and you must wear a mask!.. you should wear one using other paints but with 2k its critical..

my primer and paint was $750.. and cost me $1500 to get the paint layed down, so $2250 all up..
That saying if its a backyard job acrylic/enamel is less risky and easier to use for the DIY

tha acrylic paint on my sedan still comes up good and its stock paint thats been on there for 40 years....40 whole years

i used acrylic on the wagon as its cheaper and easier....pretty much it. ive spent probably $1000 and primer and paint. and i know if i was to do the same thing in 2pak it would cost more than double that easy
not saying thats how much it would cost but just comparing what i have used in acrylic and what it would have cost for the same stuff in 2pak

Don't forget you can use a single stage 2k paint as I used on mine. Just mix the paint with the hardner and thinners and spray on like normal enamel. Way more gloss off the gun as enamel. I got enough to make 7L of white for around $300AUD. Much cheaper then clear over base and similar results

you get direct gloss straight of the gun with 2k.

Same with acrylic enamel: gloss straight out of the gun.

You don't know why people still use it. You should find it, so that you knowledge becomes rounded out.

Yes, a base coat/clear coat is superior in many key ways, no doubt about that. But that doesn't mean other types of paint are worthless. It's all about trade-offs, what makes the world go round. For $450 you can't get a good base coat/clear coat paint job. And it doesn't require waxing every time you wash the car.

Of course if you are rich, it doesn't matter much. But the rest of us like options. Many of us will go with the 2-part paints. But some times, for some projects, we will choose acrylic enamel. Some 40 year old acrylic enamel paint jobs are still shiny. And it doesn't require waxing every time you wash the car.

I understand enamel its been around for a while, I've worked in a body shop for over 15 years. my 67 Corona has enamel paint , but hell I do not feel like waxing it every time I wash it. hence why I prefer base coat /clear coat. Enamel is exactly so 60's and outdated.

2 pac paint is more durable than enamel, i dont know why people bother with enamel or acryllic paint when you get direct gloss straight of the gun with 2k.
