maybe you have the ignition timing 180 degree out.

hi i have put the exhaust back on there is now sound of knocking now oil pressure came up as soon as the engine started, the head and rocker arm got oil in few seconds of starting!

hope its all good just need to adjust the timing and idle mixture!

thanks!

Sorry net dropped out so I couldn't edit my post properly:

Firing order still gets me sometimes.

Listen, if there is a knock, you may have spun a bearing. How quickly did you see oil pressure? Did it take a while or did it come up straight away?

I have done a few spun bearings but the most recent one was on a freshly rebuilt engine, and it sounded much different to the previous ones I had experienced.

That is a big jump to diagnose it as a spun bearing, so don;t mean to cause alarm.

Valves should not collide unless you have a fairly serious cam and you have the timing of the cam way out. Hook the exhaust up and have a better listen. Normally the big-end knock disappears as you increase the revs, then arrives once again when you drop the revs, try not to rev too much on the fresh motor though. Might pay off to remove it and have a look, just check everything else first though.

hi thanks i had my distributor a cyl 4 instead of 1 so your right it started right up!

i have this light knock kind of sound but i havnt connected the exhaust yet its only the manifold so could it be just the sound i just dont want it to be the valves hitting somthing i set it to 0.25 with feeler guage befeore i started it cold so should it be okay??

thanks!

from your description, i think your dizzy is 180 degree out of phase... just swap the lead 1 and 4, and 2 and 3 and see what happens.

Hi a12datto120y

most probably a timing issue and also check contact point position and gap ,if it is not solved the next think to go to the carburetor, i also had a same kind of issue sometimes back

thanks

Keep an eye on the oil pressure too when you're cranking it for a while. If you haven't seen good pressure yet then perhaps you might want to remove the plugs, pack the oil pump and crank it over with no compression to get pressure up.

No, doesn't sound right. That way you are doing it means the cylinder has just completed it's exhaust stroke and the spark is trying to ignite the chamber when the inlet valve has'nt yet delivered the air fuel mix. You're 180 out (speaking from the way you're explaining it).

The intake valve opens and the piston on the downward stroke draws the fuel mix in, the valve then closes and the piston is doing it;s upward stroke(compression). When the piston it at the top (TDC) or near it you would want the spark to happen.

i have the dristibutor so when the engine is tdc its at piston one the the rotor points at 1 i think it points at 1 when the exhaust valve just closes and the inlet opens!

does this sound right!

thanks!

You sorted the timing and firing order?
