i would say "yes". you need them to locate gasket & head properly.they put them there for a reason, most engines have some form of locating dowels. cheers

as the title says. I have both an a14 and a12 block, im building a worked a12 block and it has been completely stripped of studs heater pipes etc.
What im wondering is the small locating pipes on the deck of the block which i believe locate the head and gasket. It also stops the head from moving?
Question is do i need these on my late model a12 block or not?
cheers
