here is some more info from a ca18et/ca18det guru makes plenty of good sense

the common (top left) ca sump is not ideal for cornering that opening on the top left side lets oil escape the one on the right of your pic is like the ca18s/et and ca20 sumps which have no such problems due to the pickup been fully concealed but good to have some holes drilled and tapered downwards in that area also.

If you are using a det sump, i reckon closing up every other louvre and added a plate around the pickup copying the ca20 version. If you add wings, be careful, as you will need trapdoors that are sprung or the extra oil will just surge and end up splashing all over the crank causing other issues. Ive bought an accusump instead, just to give 10-15 seconds of oil direct into the main gallery if i get surge

RB have more issues than ca's so I think you will be fine. Surging will come on the long sweepers, I should be more worried than you. Bring a spare motor if your worried, can swap it for the dive home Sunday ![]()

nah no wings
that was the plan unfam but just wondering if det had a second baffle, as people talk about CA's havng oil issues anyway - i don't want to have less than stock baffles at phillip island

Will be good to see how it goes vs current engine

Is the non cradled ca18det sump from a fwd? if so it should have a wing on one side.

nah, too much hacking, i cut the main opening out a bit on the right one for the pick up but the girdle still hit the baffle in about 4 places

ok so i have been having fun with sumps
there may be 4 different ones - 1-CA18DE without crank cradle 2-CA18DET without crank cradle 3-CA18DE with cradle 4-CA18DET with cradle i have a (2) and a (3) the differences - some have 2 levels of baffe some have 1 - the sumps without cradle the main baffle is curved where it mounts to the sides of the pan. this prevents it being installed on a motor with a cradle - the oil pick up pipes are different depending on if it has a cradle or not - the DET sumps have hose fittings to suit the turbo oil drain back I have a question now... does the CA18DET with cradle sump have 2 levels of baffles or just the one? the sumps with two levels have an extra baffle in the lower section where the oil pick up is, i dont know if this is only on the non-cradle DET or both DET sumps i will update this all with pics when i know the answer and can complete the information You can view topic.
