I did this myself with my first Datsun 1200 and cleaned it up and it worked fine just ALOT OF CLEANING and drying... but never had an issue once it was cleaned

yep.... stupid, stupid, stupid!
Problem solved!!!!
hooked up the rear hoses wrong.
It appears that one of the rear hoses that go into the block is a breather not a coolant hose.
thank you for all the help

I agree with Townie, Check that there wasnt a water hose conected to the engine breather. It's the steel pipe that comes out on L/H side (manifold side) of the block towards the rear.

I have seen the Heads corrode from sitting for years, and the timing covers also, more than likely to need welding or replacing the head when you get it off, show us the pics...
the A12 I remember you could fit your thumb in the hole that corroded in the head... I will dig up a picture..

Perhaps years ago when it was last run it was fine, but then sat with water in it and froze, cracking the block. In that case it could run 'fine' but still have a water leak.
