The 71 series none stumpy puts the shifter in a way better position than the standard 1200 tranny.

Shift lever location is the least of our concerns. I even relocated a datsun shifter outside of my car on a ball joint. A square tube links the two shift levers and it works quite well.

The 71C does not have a bell housing. But the entire front of the case (the Front Case) can be swapped onto a different 71C gearbox. See Stumpy.
Most guys use the long transmission and cut a hole for the shifter.

I got the 71c out of a z series Navara 2wd.i brought the sr20 as a package with a s14 gearbox but as we have found on some threads it is too long and the shifter is too far back in the tunnel.the bell housing on the s14 gearbox is obviously correct as it is already bolted up but the bell housing on the Navara box is different. Will these separate and match up or would we need to get the Navara bell housing modified?measured the two bell housings and the lengths are the same, the rear part of the box is shorter on the 71c which give me the correct length for the gear stick to come into the cab.
Any help is appreciated. :)

SR20 bell housing? The automatic comes with one.
What is your 71C out of? Most guys use the 71C out of an S13/S14/S15.

Hi Guys,
I have recently purchased a 71c gearbox to bolt onto the back of an SR20DET. The spline is a 24 teeth OD 1" and for all intensive purposes it looks as though it will bolt straight onto the back of the SR20 bell housing. Was wondering if anyone has done this before and encountered any problems, whether redrilling or adapter plates are required? Any help would be appreciated. You can view topic.
