The SR came in 3 VE versions
SR16VE
SR18VE
SR20VE
SR20VET

They came in sporty versions of the pulsar(almera) The Primera and the Sunny.

These engines only came out in the 1998+ cars. They have variable cam timing, and the SR16VE has about the same power as a CA18DET.

They are "rare as", and if something breaks, it would be hard to get parts in AUS.

This is where the CA18s (EXA) and SR20DET (200SX) are a better option.

i know my mums SSS puslsar SR20DE motor would be pretty nice in it but somehow i dont think shed be happy with a 2000 model pulsar running an 1970s a-10 motor

my argument was directed towards putting the SR in such a light car as the 1000, not turbos in general.. I think an engine like a SR on the street would be ball tearing.. I have nothing against turbos .. heck, I'll probably get a pulsar GTi-R when I get approved for a loan! I just think cars such as small as these go better on the street with NA engines.. plus you can race in the entry level classes and not be forced to mix it with the big boys. you can't deny that once you learn the basic method of drag racing that there is not much to it, sure you have to know such things as when to back off to save engines . but there is always the limit of the car reached that you have to spend $ to go beyond.

Depends how heavy it is. I think VIC is similar to NSW. If it's similar weight to a 1200 sedan, then it should be ok. Although my guess would be that it's too light. You would be best to to get a 1.6 turbo / supercharged toyota motor (I know I shouldn't suggest this). Or try a non-turbo SR18VE. I think the SR would be too big though.

As for the argument that turbos are only good for drag racing. I think that's rubbish.

My original stock CA18DET was driveable. I used to only use 2nd and 5th when motoring about town. If you install an oversized turbo with only a 1000rpm powerband (@5000-6000rpm), then I agree it's a drag only motor. If you size the turbo right, you can get considerably more power throughout the usable rev range. You then modify the gear ratios and flywheel to suit. If you can't get the power down, increase the weight with ballast or get better tires.

Non-turbo is only good for where registration, insurance and race-class rules apply.

I would hope so.. I personally plan to fit a naturally aspirated toyota 4ag into my sedan.. licensing laws are a shade more tight over here in the west.. so I think a turbo would be killer , but more suited to drag racing..
I would like to have a nice street car and maybe run in some weekend hillclimb and car club events.. IMHO drag racing is less about driver ability and more about how much money you sink into a car.. with circuit racing every lap is different..
personally I think the front suspension has to go with that sort of power.. I was thinking maybe double wishbone suspension like the type westfield replicas run.. what do you think? anyone tried megasquirt cause thats what I intend to be running!

is it legal according to power weight whatever to put a ca18det into a 1000 wagon in australia, cause im thinking of doing this and a 2dr 1000 wagon that has come up for sale for $200 and it has a sunroof , would make a good project i reckon
