120y's are heavier at the front and dont have the nice 52/48 weight split like a 1200, they are therefore prone to understeer and basically not handle as good and yes they are damn UGLY
you should be able to get a 1200 coupe cheap enough but the utes are generally very expensive you should pull everything apart, theres not much you can wreck by pulling things apart unless you cant put em back together but im sure you want to learn everything and know exactly what condition your cars in

CA18 are also pretty cheap too...
When comparing it to an FJ or an SR. I personally think that if you are going to do a full restore and everything that you should go a 1200 because they look alot nicer and it will be worth more when you are finished. How much are you looking to spend on the car in the first place? Should be able to find a fairly decent 1200 for under a grand. Oh yeah and bodywise the 1200's and 120Y's are very different. (Although you can use the arm rests out of a 120Y in a 1200 coupe!) I am not sure about this but don't the 120Y's not handle as well as 1200's? Heaps more body roll or something? But I suppose you could always fix that. Are you going to use the car to learn to drive?

Golly gosh, perhaps an english lesson first! At least you're taking a step in the right direction with Datsuns!
The 120Y and 1200 are very similar mechanically but in terms of bodies they are very different. Basically (in my opinion) the reason that the 120Y will be so much cheaper is that a) they are more common b) they are so ugly! The 120Y is a more unusual choice for modifying, though it's good to be a bit different, a mate in Nelson has a 120Y sedan with a worked A15 and 5 speed which is quite impressive, the main practical downside (again in my opinion) is that it weighs about 100kg more. I don't imagine that there are any CA18DET powered 1200s with sunny boxes? I think that the reason that it's a popular swap is the good power and reasonably light weight, along with readily available power upgrades. Anyway this lot is just my 2 cents worth!
