Ah, two sensors were only used 1996-1997.

this is interesting:

'96 to '97... The fact that Mazda called them both a CPS was not helpful.

Of course, the old fashioned Miata enthusiasts were still calling a Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) a Crankshaft Angle Sensor (CAS) adding the the confusion as there was now a real crankshaft angle sensor with the name Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Correction, apparently on Miatas, the single sensor is per Mazda a "CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR". The combo unit per Mazda is a "CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR".

Not sure why Mazda would use both, but they do. If you use a Haltech or a Megasquirt ECU, the combo unit is all you need.

18230 SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSI. NO.2.

I don't know what he's using on that custom engine. But in general, CPS uses a magnetic sensor or an optical sensor (e.g. Nissan Optical CAS).

The sensor here is a magnetic type. The third wire suggests it has an amplifier built-in making it a hall-effect subtype.

Because it is a single sensor, it can only detect one thing (e.g. Cam Position or Crank Angle, but not both).

* Mazda B engines used either magnetic version Combo sensor or mitsubishi Optical version

These are fitted on the back of the cylinder head on Miatas.

Do you mean the Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS)?

It looks like he mounted a CPS right over the right-side Cam sprocket
