* TDC #1 - adjust valves 1, 2, 3 & 5
* TDC #4 - adjust valves 4 & 6, 7, 8 counting from front of engine ... see Valve adjustment Adjust when cold. Make sure that a 0.13" feeler gauge fits, and a 0.14" gauge does not fit.

For 4 cylinder engines I reckon the "rule of 9" is simplest. ie :
Valve 1 fully open - adjust valve 8 (1+8=9); Valve 2 open - adj 7 And so on

what I've always done with a 4 cylinder engine is turn it over until the valves on cylinder 1 are "rocking' - which means one is closing and the other opening. If you move the crank forwards and backwards at that point you see the two valves "rocking" and that means you can do the valve adjustment on cylinder 4. Then do the other cylinders accordingly:
4 rocking - adjust 1 3 rocking - adjust 2 2 rocking - adjust 3

Turn the crank to TDC, then remove the distributor cap. If its pointing to #1, you are done. If its pointing to #4 turn the crank one revolution.

Hey guys.
I have everything in the bottom end of my A15 good to go.. I've just put the head on and I am doing the valve clearances..... I'm just wondering how I can tell when the motor is at TDC of the CORRECT stroke ( If even necessary )... I know where TDC is on the dizzy.. But unsure of which rotation it's on.... And then which order I do the actual valve spacing. Cheers :) You can view topic.
