would be worth noting dropping rpm doesnt give better fuel economy
this was noticed by a few enthusiasts in the past inc myself.

keeping the rpm around what the A series likes will give the best result
including better aero eg. no roof racks or weird things sticking out etc.

Higher profile tires will help if you have low profile tires. Im trying to get a 5 speed without breaking the budget. So while im waiting i went for the 3.7 ratio diff center from a bluebird and it works a treat. i did ring 50 wreckers and found one in Taree for $150 earlier this year. The others i seen were in Tamworth when i was there for work but they are all in a pile and have to sort through them to identify. the guy doesn't know what they are off and doesn't care. There would be 120y, 1200 ute and sedan diffs maybe stanza/bluebird in original housings.

I seen a rusty pile of datsun diffs in the weather and got confused looking so i left. I will say but when i do get the 5 speed ill go back to 4.11

An A14 has the torque to cope with 3.7 ratio -- millions of USA A14s used 3.7. It was slow but it worked. For better performance, use a 4.11 ratio. Use an overdrive 5-speed to reduce noise and increase fuel economy while cruising.

I ask because I have a 2.4 litre L20B with reasonable work done to the head and I only want to try one out if i can get it cheap enough as i believe i have the torque to cope with it. Have you run it with a different ratio? 3.9 can be found pretty cheap and is really close, i have bought a couple for $50 in the past. I tried a 4.1 and when only moving 0.2 in ratio it wasn't that noticeable.

celica 5 spd is overdrive, why would you want 3.7?

surely they come in a specific model, like the auto wagon series 1? find out what model and we can keep an eye out at the wreckers and such for ya
