Tom, I'm the guy with they 510 Wagon. I was bummed you broke. Was nice meeting you and just the couple laps I got behind you when you passed me helped me TREMENDOUSLY with figuring the track out. That and talking with you.. and thanks for all the 1200 tips and info. Bummed you didn't get to race because we would have had fun on Sunday. I ended up running 2:46.xx on Sunday and we would have had some fun out there!!
I have a lot to learn about the 1200 (this is my first non- L series Datsun... all my others were 510, 610, 620, etc) but watching you out there got me excited about getting my 1200 prepped and ready to vintage race next season and learning a whole new style of driving and whole new kind of car to play with!

years ago over a decade to be exact read a jap article on the bonus of bike carbs over weber for high rpm and it was mainly they didnt impede any flow while webers needed to be the right size with no chokes to get the same results along with direct path without big variations on port separation so flow could be as direct as possible.
I played with many sizes for different A series and found the 34mm are plenty for the street but for racing what you have must be savory delight! also found another box that could work nicely http://www.ebay.com/itm/99-00-01-02-0 ... :~08AAOSw5VFWHRyq&vxp=mtr

@dvr1000 the carbs as Dave mentioned they are bike carbs but the manifold was custom made for a Nissan A-Series. Before all of the SCCA sports racer competitors went to motorcycle engines they used 1300cc A-series motors. As it was an unrestricted class (other than displacement) they found the flat slides made more power. Also note they revved these motors to 10,0000 rpms so the higher flow over traditional DCOEs was a big plus.
D sequential box is a huge improvement over H pattern; that is the one thing I really miss from when I ran the bike engined sports racer. I used the clutch to roll out of the pits after that it was up and down the box no clutch left foot brake etc. Big advantage in balancing the car on corner entry. Tom

I confused that pic with a setup of the FCR units on a japanese site
great stuff! the only issue is the 56a box is so light and efficient that nothing comes close for bang for buck for its little use of hp compared to a box with bigger gears and internals. Harder materials to replace the internals is super expensive although available but I still wonder since we are only making less than 200hp if its possible to use a Baker DD5 or similar aftermarket Harley box which are sequential and used on drag bike with 50% more torque than a stock A15? http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/v ... id=473100#forumpost473100

Nice Post.
I wish I could have gave you every gearbox I broke before I broke it. Breaking stuff is my business. Since I figure I can't break a Datsun car itself, I'm good to go. It the last thing on my car that's a Datsun. ![]() Rallying sounds kind of fun. I'm use to the 6 seconds and them Bamm!!! It's over.

Those are Keihen FCR carburetors. You can buy them from various motorsport shops.
Keihin is a major suppler to Honda and supplies Triumph, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM, and Harley-Davidson. Keihin’s largest shareholder is Honda Motor Co. Ltd.

D First I put a picture of the engine bay in the track photos, see below.
Dave the box I have is a 56A, so it may well be the issue. Benny, I would absolutely love one of the dog boxes PJZ had, I stupidly passed on one that was very reasonable that just needed a rebuild. The issue is my car might be worth all of $7,000 and adding a $3500 gearbox to it seems a bit much. The 4 speed Option II box will set me back $1500 but it's been professionally rebuilt and it comes with boxes of spares. There might even be a spare mid close cluster gear in the spares. I haven't checked the bearing with a caliper yet but I can visibly move the input shaft bearings well one on the cluster gear. Circa 2008 I stripped the original gearbox with a pretty standard A12GX but that had 100K on it. After that I picked up the mid-close box from one of the San Francisco area 1200 racers, he did mention I should go through the box because it had quite a few miles on it..........naturally I was under the gun so I slapped it in and back 2010 that munched 3rd. At the time the car made a whopping 73WHP. PJZ had a gear set that as mentioned I slapped in without thoroughly checking everything. The gearbox had roughly 30 events on it and to be honest it puked its contents on 3 different occasions, so that sure didn't help. The box has been rather whiny since just before I put the A15 in, the A15 has been in the car for the last 7 events. I even looked into modding a Miata/MX5 5 speed and using the competition gear set but after mating up the bell housing buying a $2000 gear set we'd quickly be back at $3500. Tom
