I recommend the stock shifter, it works very well
* Examine the bushings. If damaged, fit new ones (about $10 from Nissan) * A new shifter knob (about $40 off eBay)

Ha, cheers DD. Doing a full resto for my first Datsun (120y) and both of my gearboxes don't have the pattern. One is missing the knob and one has it worn off! Are there any good suggestions for shifters? Preferences etc?

Wait, on that last quote it only says that it has to be "displayed in view of the driver at all times", so you could technically have a sticker anywhere as long as you can see it? As in hide it on the dash? (small but visible)

New Zealand was the original report
Australia was the question - they give tickets for it! United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards Quote: 49 CFR 571.102 - Standard No. 102; Transmission shift position sequence

In my country, Automatics are exempt from the labeling requirements. But with Australia being as litigious as it is, I'd use the same labels as the car the gearbox came out of. That's usually printed on the shift knob or on the shift panel/shift console
