Need them if you
1) Go to the "top hat" style front disc brakes -( ie the 254mm 280z 'rears' ) 2) as Bishop said - need to run spacers for clearance No benefit but you can still run longer studs but only with open end wheel nuts ( or REALLY deep blind ones)

I fitted longer studs to my coupe because my 3 piece wheels were hitting the caliper and needed to run an 8mm spacer. Not sure if its legal but YOLO.
