![]() The green area is the flange or plate to act as a flange It could go all the way across the bottom if you cut the complete base area of the sump including the A series front hump but you must make sure you give it a little angle before it meets the window drain area at the front. Being flat steel plate you can bend it a tad to create this angle and the yellow dots indicate nuts on the outside to secure the SR hump but the pink ones indicate fastening from the inside. Use studs on the sr hump and lock nuts for securing. This is nothing flashy just purpose build that reflected my older Alfa engines which came with winged sumps since after the war if not before ww2 also. Alfa and Abart Fiats rust buckets were my favorite budget cars their engineering if nothing else. Datsuns equally fave at the time for their simplicity and lightweight potential that allowed for more tinkering.

Yeah righto.
The SR20 sump thingo - I'm not familiar with SR20s - too fancy for me... So If I was to cut off (or most of it) the front hump on the oil pan, make up a flange to suit and both this up. at $130 delivered, thats cheap. The casting doesn't look fancy, but its a sump and what do you expect for $130. Only thing of course is to make sure I can still get the turbo oil return hole somewhere. It could be an easy option, plus it has cooling finns and its alloy -- fully sic racing spec! I wonder if i get a sticker that I can put on the drivers door..... Looking at that sump. I guessing that the flange is supposed to be square to make a slanted bottom for the oil to drain to one side?

2 ways I was thinking about adding wings to an A series sump
was to use a flat plate flange welded on the front end to suit the fitment of an alloy sr20de front section eg. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NISSAN-S13-S1 ... id=p2045573.c100033.m2042 the other is too just use rectangular box section pipe 2.x or 3mm thickness easy to reshape in rounded ends if you wanted and much easier to weld up. http://medien.sixbros.de/Artikelbilder/800px/10001217_1.jpg ![]()

Didnt think abot clearance - Thanks dattoman - wings it is then.
I have been thinking about how to best do that and make it look as 'factory' as i can - trying to avoid an ugly looking box on the side of the sump. Thinking that i can cut up an spare a10/12 sump and weld that to the side. If I can utilse the original steel with the standard pressings, I should look as factory as possible. Since Im only chasing a couple of extra litres, not an extra 10, I think that should work. - unless I can find one pre-done at a fair price point. As for the drain back valves Datmado, I recon you want one in the pickup so that oil is kept all the way to the rocker oilers if possible. The oil cooler (if i can) will be on the return side of the pump - machine up a plate that goes between the filter and the filter screw point - have two threaded fittings, in and out to the cooler so its part of the filter circuit. With a higher volume oil pump and keeping everything in circuit, I should avoid having to use an external pump to drive the oil cooler

I’m going to fit a check valve to the oil lines
to alleviate drain back . I am also fitting an oil cooler with its own fan which I am fitting remotely on the right hand side of the radiator behind the grill with twin temperature sender units located at the oil pump feed and return lines:which will be wired up to a single gauge with twin read outs.I am a great believer in having qualified data.

Depth will be an issue
Since the bottom of the pan is about level with the bottom of the crossmember... and our cars don't sit too far off the ground Certainly look at getting some wings and gates if your not dry sumping

Yeah I read that thread before and had a look at Dodgemans porn collection.
That alloy datsunsport one looks good. Pity its not gated, but it looks PORN! Thats the design im thinking. Just deepen the existing profile for the extra capacity, larger oil filter, and oil cooler should do the trick. Just have to lengthen the pickup - thats the tricky bit. Waiting for Peter Zerkart to get back to me with some info on his stash of stuff as well else ill just get cracking in the shed. The sump will have to have a oil drain spot for a turbo anyways.

Tech wiki has good imfo on building your own winged metal sumps

D,
On the remote oil filters, Its something worth considering, however, until I squeeze everyting into the engine bay, its hard to know if that sorts of extras will fit. I have already accepted that air-con is in the too hard basket. The battery tray has already been removed and the battery will be in the boot, so I do have some space there, but the radiator and intercooler will take up most of that space. Oil cooler I think in front of the radiator in that small space between the front apron and the rad support. Wombat, When you get a chance for some pics, Id be keen on options for extra capacity.
