SHort for utility. A pickup here is a truck usually a 1/2-ton or 3/4-ton, like the Toyota Hilux or Ford F100. The 3/4-tons usually have eight-bolt wheels. A 'truck' here has a separate cab and cargo bed (like the Datsun 720). What we call a 'utility truck' is one without a cargo bed but instead has custom metal cabinets installed in the back, usually with a smaller cargo space. Pickups (trucks, not utes) are so popular here they account for about half of all passenger vehicle sales. These are used for daily commuting, trips to the grocery store, etc. as well as serious commercial work like hauling supplies for house builders and the like.

Yeah, it's pronounced yoot.
SHort for utility. Don't you guys call them pick ups over there? Or sometimes trucks?

Hear's the bad new: the term "ute" is being used in America, but as a shortened form of "Sport Utility Vehicle", often said "sport/ute". SUVs are all wagon-type vehicles.
Wouldn't it be great if Proton comes out with the Jumbuck Sport based on the Proton Lotus Elise? The Elise is RWD (right-wheel-drive) and very light (lighter than a Datsun 1000 I think).

I test drove one of those Bajas the other day. I liked it, but I like my Legacy 2.5GT better. As for the name, perhaps we can try to get the term "Ute" into the vocabulary of the great unwashed! By the way, that is pronounced "yoot" isn't it? I'd sure hate to get people using the term incorrectly. You can view topic.
