#20 Re: so just how strong is a stock diff?

I owned a '76 808 and a 1200 at the same time ... I compared the diffs once, and it look exactly the same in nearly every way. I reckon the 808 has the H150, probably supplied by the same gear company.

Wouldn't the H165 actually look bigger on the outside?

i think an rx 3 short nose center is almost identical as a ute diff 'not the same, just like it 'an rx 3 long nose center is wat w want 4 a conversion ,u might as well use a sky line diff 28sp limos in some disk brakes same stud patern to! just shorten it, weld on ur saddles

how do u guys compare a stock coupe H145 diff with stock B-310 Diff(H-150 i guess). how strong it is then H-145?
and do u guys know what differential is in 76-77 Mazda 808(RX-3 Chassis but with a OHC 1.3 litre 4cyl engine)? and how strong is Mazda diff compared to H-145?

The newer utes have the H165. The older utes have the H145, same as the coupe.

The H145 is a very good diff, it's ultra lightweight, efficient and holds up well behind an A12 engine. But it's not designed for high torque, so if you go with a bigger engine or are racing, a bigger diff is something to consider.

is that H190 or h165??
I have a ute diff and have been told mine is a h165 ute diff and the 190's are a couple of inches wider

Is there any way to identify the diff you have in your car/ute just by looking at it, or looking for numbers stamped on it? I had a look last night and was unable to find anything apart from R81 on the rear centre housing. It's in an 85 1200 Ute, and it looks like it would be the stock diff.

The US cars were directly imported from Japan. It's Australia that did local-assembly in the mid-70s and so might have different parts, like the Aussie 120Y's Borg-Warner diff.

The Japanese B310 used the H150 differential. Somebody correct me if there were others used in addition. For example, if the B310 GX used a bigger diff.

i think that differential in my B-310 might not b same as U.S. sedan, do any of u guys know what diff was in the australian right hand drive B-310 sedan which was directly imported from japan that is? it should b with 4sp GB not 5sp.

BTW how strong is H150 diff compared to stock 1200 coupe diff?

The US B310 for 1980 has the H150 differential. Again, the HP is not important, but the torque is. With a turbo you can make significantly more torque even if the peak HP is not increased much.

I would keep the stock differential and see what happens. It might be just fine with your mildly boosted engine. If not, you can upgrade to a larger differential later.
