Does the vl diff have enough meat to get resplined? Q1. Yes the VN-V8 ones are even larger. Q2. No, Respliner said that they are fine even after resplining process. Q3. Ratios differ. Mine is 3.45:1 (VL-SLE) also comes in 3.08 [V8] and (3.9 VLTurbo inc. LSD) But they 3x the price, and very difficult to get. Q4. Maybe 13s, 14s defintely. The rear disks and calipers are quite large. Q5. Car hasn't moved under it's own steam yet, unsure if I'll need bias valve. Q6, Maybe 25% heavier than 1200 Ute H165 diff. Don't know. Better than it breaking all of the time. Chris

chris,
does the vl diff have enough meat to get resplined? Did you get the splines heat treated, if so how much wosshit? Whats the standard VL diff ratio? (is turbo the same ratio?) Can 13" rims be used with the vl disks? and calipers. Since the conversion, have you had any problems, and how much more does the VL diff weight? Sorry about all the Q but I like to try and get a full picture..

If you carefully cut the housing with a dropsaw or hacksaw. Measure the amount taken out. Use that measurement of removed tube from each side and get axles cut down to suit. You only need to be accurate to 1 or 2 mm, some slack is ok. Being too long is bad.. Some axles don't have enough diameter along the full length to allow new splines to be cut. This is the worst case scenario.
If you have access to a migwelder, you can reweld the tube back together after the new splines are cut on the axles. You can get splines cut for AU$30/side, I machined the diameter down in a lathe, so all the spline dude had to do, was cut the spline. Then get the spring perches in position. I was lucky and only needed to shorten one axle with the open-wheeler commodore diff. I used the short axle as my new long axle, and shortened the long axle to be my new short axle. So my diff could have cost $150 total..But I payed $120 for the chrome rear cover, $150 for new disks, $40 for a cliper overhaul kit, and new pads $50, so mine was still less than $600, including the brake overhaul. Yeah my wife has a Surf with only a 2L but the diff's stuffed with a locker and 5.29:1 gears and it's spinning 35" tires without a problem. Between her driving
and me taking it out mud whompin' pretty regularly I'd say they're good diffs.

Thanks Ange, I suppose I'll use it then. Just gonna have to find someone to shorten it for the right price

a 4wd hilux diff will take just about anything you can throw at it..... they are used behind many 10sec rotors.....
for a CA they are probably an overkill... as they are heavy aswell.... and will definately need to be shortened.... you could get away with something smaller but since its not costing you anything to get you might aswell use it... at least you know you'll never need to touch it again.. no matter how hard you drive....

I am inheriting a Hilux diff and have heard they are quite strong. How strong are they and how would it go behind my CA18det? Also how does the track compare to the stocky?
