"locked diff" = no differential (welded gears, or spool replaces the differential)

Limited slip is what you want for the street if you are having a traction problem

The "ratchet locker" your Surf has might be a sort of hybrid, like the famous ""Detroit Locker". What's a Surf anyways?

Some offroad vehicles have an off/on locker, like the famous ARB air locker. It is manually locked and unlocked using a switch in the passenger compartment.

properely locked is good on street i no that cause my dad had it in his 9'' diff in his dodge im might lock my standard diff with welder till get a proper diff i no its dogdy but it will only be for a month till i save up for a stronger!

When you guys say locked diff you mean welded or a purchased locking differential? I have locking diffs in my Surf and no problems... wife's every day vehicle. I can see where welding one up would be illegal and dangerous (however fun ) but a locking diff that ratchets around corners can be just as fun however not illegal.

dattodude im going 2 get a diff for mine eventually but blown my bugdet wit rebuild and turbo and... ect but im going 2 get a VN v8 diff u reccomend that with tha ca18det what are u using cause ive got basically same hardware as u on my motor?

If you were in NSW,
Everytime that you turned a corner, you'd have a "sustained loss of traction", making you liable to have your car confiscated for 3-6 months. So yeah, I wouldn't do it on the street either. Remember there needs to be a clear line betwen something for the street, and something for the track.

A $1000 LSD diff is better than a $1000 fine. At least you have the diff to show for your money.

i didnt no u can get fined far out that sux! im going 2 still lock up my diff i want 2 i like it! i find it easier 2 control! rather then one wheel spin both do constantly and i do agree it is dangerous but not if the driver has knowlage about driving with a locked diff!

A massive (and i do mean massive) fine will be a problem if he gets caught.

Its a stupid and dangerous thing to do to a street car.

Plus if you put some decent power behind it the axles will snap like twigs every couple of weeks. I know from experience

why y mates ute has a locked standard diff and with the ca18det and has had no probs for 10months!

I would recommend definately NOT locking your diff if you wanna drive safely on the street and keep your axles in one piece.

i would rekomend getting the diff locked up it will givee u better traction and cheaper then LSD! but if u want LSD have a talk 2 your local DIFF specialist and he will prolly recommed best LSD for the blubird diff! GOOd luck!
