A good tailsaht is a must behind anything with a bit of power. I have seen some quite messy tailshaft failures.

Extension Housing thats the one! Sorry for any confusion.

Unfortunately at about 80 kph I floored it and ended up with the extension housing snapping in two, the input shaft was no longer. This was the result of the tailshaft snapping in two (in the middle). I have since installed the S13 CA box and had the tailshaft made out of Ford V8 gear.

Both these trans are interchangable and use the locally made excellent strong and finely detailed castings with NMCA (Nissan Motor Company Australia) cast into the case.

Thanks for clearing that up Feral, I've just been brought up to call anything from the sandwich plate forward (to the engine) as the bellhousing, and anything on the other side of the sandwich plate back as the rear extension.

You are right, it's wrong! The parts book calls it a transmission case, & five mechanics in the district that i have asked called it a transmission case, so i will stick with that. That way, we won't get mixed up with a real bell housing.

I thank you very much for all the info that you have produced.This sort of stuff is worth it's weight in rare parts.

Can i assume that the trans case for series 3 Bluebirds & Pintara's are interchangeable, for the purpose of the exercise?
Is one of these preferable for use in a 1200 or 1000 with CAxxDE engine when doing the stumpy gearbox thing?

The CA18DE and DET's use 71B boxes. Very late DET's in S12's use the 71C box same as SR20's. Box type is easily identifiable from the number cast into the casing.

Harry,
I know its wrong technically, but most people call the front casing forward of the sandwich plate, the bell housing.

The main difference between 71B and 71C that has implications for front casing swaps is the bearing diameters and shift rail diameters.
In the 71C boxes the front bearings are bigger and the rails are larger as well.

I will start a new post on some basic gearbox info that may help as well.

I was right, the transmission case is being incorrectly refered to as a bellhousing. I thought i was going bonkers. I probably am anyway.

The bellhousing is just the part that mounts to the block & covers the clutch. Why is the gear case refered to as the bellhousing i wonder?

You keep refering to a bellhousing as a separate part.
A separate bellhousing is the part that contains the clutch, & bolts to the front face of a gearbox case. The only thing a bellhousing does is to mount the box & contain the clutch & it's control components.

Are you calling the gearbox case, complete with it's integral bellhousing by the name "bellhousing", or is there something i'm missing here. I have not seen a separate bellhousing for these models yet, only separate gearbox cases with integral bellhousings.

My parts book calls it "transmission case"

An adapter plate is usually found between the cylinder block & the bellhousing, or the block & the gearbox, however, my parts book refers to the plate at the rear of the transmission case "Assembly, Plate Adapter" so adapter plate it is, although i would have regarded it as the rear bearing support plate.

Prodat, i think that, from your description, that the "extention housing" broke, but bloody hell, what did you do to it to achieve that.

I used to have the stumpy box in my ute but it wasnt up to the task and eventually the rear of the box (transfer case?) snapped. I have since put in an S13 CA box and its lasted so far. As already suggested the S13 box will sit further back and will require the handbrake to be relocated a little further back.
