#1 a14 wont start
sammy Posted on: 2004/1/29 5:29
finally got my a14 with twin su's bolted in and the dam thing wont start. can anyone give me some tips on why, it turns over and every thing is hooked up right. i pulled out the spark plugs and they have a little bit of surface rust on them. they still spark but some bloke told me that it could mean the block is internally rusted and suggested i may have to stroke it to get rid of it. the engine hasnt been started in a couple of years. i have tried pooring fuel down the carbies, what else can i do?

not good about the rust issue, hopes its not rusted.
only a few suggestions,
>buy new spark plugs, check rotor, points
etc.
>have your carby's been rejetted to suit
an a14, may be flooding it
>try aerostart as well (crc can)
But if the internals are rusty and you have turned it over, good chance your rings are rusty and are now stuffed, prepare for smoke.

the engine is an a14gx and originally came with the twin su's, there might just be so much dust and junk in the carbies. does anyone recomend that i send them to a specialist to get them cleaned out?

sammy, an engine needs three things to start (and a properly tuned carb is not one of them):

1. Fuel (must get some fuel down into the carb), hence the spray ether idea, or your idea of pouring a little gas down the carb

2. Spark. If you pull a plug wire off and put it on a spare plug, when cranking over you can see if it sparks, that's a good sign

3. Compression. Too much gas can wash off the oil seal of the rings and lose your compression. Dripping or squirting a little bit of motor oil in the spark plug holes is not a bad idea.

Your best bet at this point is to borrow a compression gauge and see how much compression there really is. You should have at least 90 in all four cylinders. If it is lower or one cylinder is lower, that's your problem.
