#1 L-series 5-speed vs. Celica 5-speed
Tyrie Posted on: 2004/10/7 1:29
I've just been offered a Datsun 5-speed (I can only assume from behind an L-series engine) for pretty much nothing.
Would it be cheaper and easier to fit behind my a15 than the celica box thats already sitting in my shed?

do all L-series 5-speeds have hydrolic clutches? And how hard is it to put a hydrolic clutch in a car with a mchanical clutch?

Unless you are putting an L-Series engine in. The 5 speed will be fairly useless to you. I don't know of any adapters to fit L-series boxes to A-series engines.

Fitting a Hydraulic clutch is not easy. You need quite a few tools, and need to do some planning to fit the correct bore clutch master cylinder to the firewall, and determine the correct sized slave cylinder that fits to the gearbox.

The Celica box will need a conversion belhousing from Dellow. Neither are an easy or cheap conversion.

Expense of 5 speed boxes is one of the main reasons why I run a CA18.

Easier to fit the Toyota T50 because it just bolts on with the Dellow kit (so I've heard...). For the L-series 5-speed, you'd need to fabricate bellhousing and driveshaft at least.

as much of a nissan fan as i am, the celica box is the better choice. it's one of the nicest shifting boxes around - with different shifter positions and gear ratios available.

I love this logic to justify a CA conversion that costs $XX,000 :))

I did the sums on a warmed over twin weber'ed A15 with a 5 speed in 1991.. Installing a CA18DE worked out about the same price, with a much better result. The total cost (including car) was about $3500.

The CA18DET Datto project ..well that's a different story.

I can break 4 CA18 gearboxes for the cost of one A-Series 5 speed.. Do the "long term costs" analysis.

Yeah she's back on the road, with tyres clearing the guards now.

I've had a bit of an idea about you're spongy brake problem on the 1000 coupe.. i'll give you a call about it when I get a chance.

Ok thanks for that, it was just that the L-series 5-speed is so cheap, and spending $700 on a dellow kit is putting me off the celica box for now.

Dunno, Tyrie, I just spent $800 on a 63a box and button clutch to suit an A series...the price was right and all I need to do is use a slightly shortened tailshaft from a 5 spd Stanza and also a re drilled and lightened flywheel to accept an L-series pressure plate...another $300 should see it in...and will do me for any A-series I want to install.....and the sound of a twin webered A-series is quite magic!!!
