#1 Possible Gearbox issues... help!
sprite63 Posted on: 2006/1/30 22:08
Hi guys, I broke a gearbox mount about two weeks ago - but my car was still ok to drive.

Anyway I changed the mount a few days ago and now it's developed a weird clicking noise. To be more specific if I start in 1st it starts with a squeaking noise quickly developing into a fast paced clicking noise. Sometimes I get an occasional clunk sort of noise between gear changes as well. It only makes this noise in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd.

Now after a bit of investigation if I put a bit of pressure on the gearlever in each gear - i.e.. hold in back in place in second lets say - the noise does not occur.

Besides the noise there has been no difference in performance and there is no vibration or anything like that.

Can someone give me an idea of what is going on?

Thanks

Matt.

It is not the 'stick rattling around due to worn bushes?

Squealing sounds like a dry bearing. . .

I'm hoping nothing is floating around in the g'box.

It is not the speedo cable? (doubt it)

Hope it is something quick and cheap.

Hey Matt - sounds like the new mount is different in some way to the one you replaced. Your box sounds like it is hitting your tunnel now and you are modifying this noise by putting pressure on the lever. I would suspect that you may need to 'space' out the new mount to gain the tunnel clearance you had before.

It is possible that since you have replaced the gearbox mount tha the angle that the drive shaft enters the box has now changed, i.e. now applying a different load on the gearbox output shaft.

I had a similar problem; started out as a small whine, which eventually developed into a gearbox failure [rear bearing on the layshaft] Im picking that the clicking/whine is noisier in first gear due to that their is more load on the rear bearings [ output shaft and lay shaft]. As you shift to other gears that load is reduced because you are moving towards the bearing at the front of the gearbox. In my case the gearbox was eventually locked in third gear.

If you have the time, these boxes are very easy to pull down and inspect. Could be easier to replace with a temp box to keep your car ion the road.

cheers Benny

Thanks, Cable_Tie, teretonga and benny.

Cable_Tie - on closer inspection at lunch just then I found that the gear stick is in fact very loose, I'm pretty sure that the bushes that hold it in place have perished completely. Is it possible that they have broken up and made their way into the box? Anyone know where I can track down some new ones?

teretonga - I checked the clearance and it's all ok, but that was what I thought it was at first too.

benny - unfortunately I think that your description is spot on with what is happening to me... gearbox replacement time might be on the way if replacing the gearstick bushes does not help.

could it be that the dust cover over the fornt tailshaft yoke may have been bent during the gearbox mount breaking and is hitting on the side of the tailshaft...just a thought.
I dont have any rear dust cover on my gearbox.
