I have a 620 pick-up...i'm putting msd box and coil..do i need to keep the stock resistor?is there anyway i could bypass it and will it make a diff...thanks

when your running msd (muliple spark discharge) with a high voltage coil, depending on what distributer you have determines what resistor you need. it is just a whit chalky thing with two terminals on it. any auto parts store should have it. it will run horribly without it though. so, yes it is a must

Depends what coil you have.

Some coils can handle 12V all the time..

The resistor-equipped ones can't. They can only handle 12V during start cranking.

Removing the resistor, will make the coil go into meltdown on a long drive.

Get the specs on the coil that you've bought with the MSD box. That will tell you whether it needs a ballast resistor or not.

thanks guys..i just thought that leaving the resister out will increase spark...well i'll stick to the resister.

Putting the resistor if its not required, is abit silly. Whether you have points or elctronic pickup inside your dissy makes no difference. The dissy is just a trigger for the MSD ignition module.
Like Dattodude wrote - it comes down to what coil you have. This then determines if the resistor is required. The coil is the one and only thing that determines this.

well i'm useing the msd blaster coil 2..will i need one???

when hooking up coil. coil is hooked up directly to msd unit no resister between controller and coil you can leave the resister in line that is now hooked up to the control unit to supply ign power feed to turn controller on. it no longer provides power to the coil. the coil now recieves its power thru the controller from the feed to the battery. the resister reduced voltage across the points to keep them from burning out. check the msd wiring guide.
I ran a msd unit on my race car for 15 years no resister with bocsh coil, before converting to electromotive cranktrigger

so i can just bypass and connect the two wires without the resister in between??and will it be o.k...once again this is a electronic distribiter
