i am also after abit of info on diffs. i am currently in the process of looking for a new diff for my 1979 1200 ute and i have enquired on a borg warner diff that another member has on another forum. now just wondering if it will bolt straight into my ute or will i have to do some moddifications to the tailshaft or the diff mounts at all?

I would have thought the H165 in the ute would be a pretty good diff, strong, 4.1 ratios...

Unless the Borg Warner rear axle assembly is a narrowed one from a Skyline, or other suitable car, it will not be an improvement over the H165 version that comes standard under the 1200 utes.
The advantage of the H165 differential is that it comes in a variety of ratio's, has LDS available, & you can switch these into your ute's rear axle housing in your driveway, in an afternoon.
You can't do that with a Borg Warner unit.

dat51k, if you are thinking about the BW rear assembly from a Aussie B210, probably it will work if you use the matching B210 tailshaft -- and with slight bracket modifications to spring mounts, handbrake cable, etc (the same modifications you'd have to do to fit a 1200 sedan diff to the newer ute).

But like they say, the '79 ute should already have the strong H165 diff.

yeah mine is the H165 but it is starting to make some noises that i have been noticing abit more now and not sure how long it will last.
