there might have once been an asbestos one there. Anything out of a tube not meant to be exposed to great heat would be a bad choice. maybe if theres a squeezable exhaust gasket stuff?

Yes, there's a gasket originally (part # 14005-18000) but you should be able to seal it OK with exhaust assembly paste so lang as the surfaces are good. I've always done it that way and not had any problems.

As always, thanks for the info.
I bought an entire engine gasket kit, and (of course) that gasket is not in the kit. I'll hit a local speed shop and see if they have some gasket material that will stand up to the heat. It doesn't look *too* difficult to make one, provided I use the proper material.

Guess I was lucky with the gasket kit available in Australia...it came with two of them.
Permaseal I think are the company in Australia - and I think the gasket kit was a GC277. These are the guys http://www.aagaskets.com.au/

YES, there is a gasket, (2) and a definite must!
I personally have never used anything but factory gaskets , so not sure if you can get away with some type of sealant, but hey, it's a DATSUN! and if the surfaces are good and flat, Y not?

without the gasket it must be like the EGR from hell. well not quite that bad, but probably noisy and having a bit of a leak.

One of the reasons I pulled the engine is to fix the oil leaks and fix the exhaust leak that was coming from that joint. (It was pretty loud and drove me crazy) I found a sheet of proper exhaust gasket material, and have made a nice template for cutting out the gasket. I also chased the threads with a 6mm X 100 tap, and got all new bolts, so I'm reasonably confident that the exhaust leak problem will be solved. Luckily, I have some good hot rod shops in the area, and was able to find the right gasket material fairly easily. Thanks again for your help. You can view topic.
