#1 a14 rebuild in prgress
casper17000 Posted on: 2006/5/27 6:41
last night i did the teardown of the next motor for my b210. its one of the a14's that bendatsun gave me. while i was taking it apart i thought i should have just installed it, because it is in such good condition. it apears to have low miles on it. never the less i have the parts to do a rebuild. so i figured if im gonna turbo a motor i should turbo a good one.

a couple questio0ns though. where should i get my main and rod bearings? do they have to be oversized? do i have to pleace my oil pump?
can i just replace the pistons and rings, and engine bearings, and all seals and gaskets?

what do most of you do?

If the engine is as good as you seem to think, then just a garden variety 'major overhaul' will make it like new.

The crankshaft bearings will need to be oversize ONLY if the crankshaft has been ground to an undersize. Measure the crank, & if it is within specs, & it is still standard size, then a new set of bearings from either one of the major national parts houses, or your Nissan dealers parts department will be just the ticket.

Again, if the oil pump is worn, or damaged, then repair or replace it, but if the rest of the engine is good, then the chances are that the pump is good too.

If the bores are within limits, then piston replacement is not usually necessary, but new rings are a good investment.

The best thing you can do is get yourself a workshop manual for your car & read it carefully. It should tell you all you need to know to successfully overhaul your engine.
These are such simple & straightforward engines that you should have no trouble with it.

well i have a feq manuals covering every datsun ever made as far as i know. i have read through them carfully. the reason i wanted to replace the pistons is beacause i have a new set that is already had new rings put on them. so i might as well right? i also have to do a new clutch i believe since my current flywheel is crapp. i have a spare though. my buddy that was helpin me with the rebuild told me i didnt need to replace my bearings cause they all look good. is that ok to do?

I find these questions interesting,
Especially with what you have told in the past.

Best of luck. May it all go straight forward.

Just put the head back on and turbo it. These A-engines last a long time. Remember next time to make a compression check before dissasembling, often they don't need fixing.

You probably don't need to replace the bearings, they rarely go bad. Buy some Plastigage from the store and measure the clearance. If it's right on spec and the bearings look good, don't bother to replace them.

Likely the least expensive parts will be http://rockauto.com. However if you have Shuck's or Grand Auto or Kragen nearby, it may be more handy to print out the prices from their web site (http://www.partsamerica.com) and they usually match them.
