#1 Z car alloy drums?
B210sleeper Posted on: 2006/6/5 20:44
Has anyone ever fitted the alloy rear brake drums to a 210? I need new rear drums and remembered that the z's had aluminium drums.

Well I have both a Zed and a 210 - never thought to check if the alloy finned/steel drum (ie steel inner alloy outter) will fit the 210 rears - I know they fit on a 510 drum (had some on my old 510 years ago) - given my zed is in bits and I will be going to disc on the rear I could just try one of the zed drums on the 210 and report back later :) but I will be going to disc on the 210 in the future also

i don't know how soon i'll get to putting in a 200sx rear axle, but i have more than enough braking power, i was just thinking it would be a good way to loose some weight.

If it doesn't fit, can the whole 280z backing plate and such be swapped to make it work?

Here's an aluminum drum on ebay.

B210Sleeper - is that your car in the your avatar? If so I forgot that the US sold the B310 as a 210 much like the A10 as a 510 (why does the US do this when the rest of the world does not anyone......) so I should have said I have B210 aka 120Y.

Anyway I had a very quick look in the dark (no measurement) and I believe you could install the whole backing plate and drums from a 240/260/280z onto the rear axle/diff housing with a little work.

hmmm
that could be interesting for a rear brake upgrade let me know what you find.

yes that is my car. it's a bit of an old pic, but it's basically like that now.

My workshop manuals say that both the B210 [120Y] & the B310 [Sunny/ 210] used rear drums of 8" [203.2mm] diameter, while the P510 [Dat.1600] had rear drums of 9" [228.6mm].
I have no idea of what diameter the Z cars had, but if nzeder used them on his P510, then the alloy drums from a Z car will not work on the smaller Datsuns that we have.

i'd expect to have to swap the backing plate and stuff, i wonder if that's the only issue, and maybe relocating the holes.

this is just theoretical, maybe it's useful maybe not.

Better to work with the front brakes & have them right on the money, after all, rear brakes aren't much use when the back wheels are in the air.

i already got more front brakes than i'll ever need.

another dumb question...

you know how some 510's have those disk brakes on the IRS axle itself? what if one had a single brake disk on the driveline right before the diff? wouldn't that actually be as good or better and way lighter.
