#1 Paint Prep Help
dattson510 Posted on: 2006/8/15 2:24
Hello,
I just finished taking the cloth top off of my B210 and in doing so I discovered rust around the windscreen rubber. The rust is bad enough that I'll have the shop take care of it, but what I want help with is the adhesive removal. After 30 years, it has become like a plastic and not easy to sand off. Is there a solvent that will remove this or at least help?
thanks,
Ryan

Best bet would be paint stripper I think.
I would use a grinder with a wirebrush or sanding disc because i hate stripper with a passion.
Thats why my b20 is taking so long to get to bare metal
Cheers
Ryan

Before you try the stripper try this. Use some wax and grease remover from the auto parts store. Normally used to before painting your car. Pretty much the same as zippo lighter fluid (cheap way) to find out if it will cut it. If not then hit it with the stripper.

another option, if you have a heat gun, is to heat gun it then scrap off with a chisel or similar, thinners is more aggresive than wax and grease, yerr i'm with Chafe the good olde grinder with wire brush is always good

Not sure if this will help but use a thinner with 100% M.E.K (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). I use this at work to remove glue all the time if the glue robot makes a mess. If your going to try this wear some rubber gloves its got a real bite to it and maybe even wear a pair of safety glasses. Trust me it hurts like #### when you splash the tiniest bit in your eyes.

Agreed unless you really want to be overcome by the fumes and become a bit light headed
