Is it possible to drop my a12 with gearbox attached, into the ute with the crossmember and steering in there???without scratching anything??
or should i just wait to put that gear in until i put the engine in. which isnt for another fortnight when i can borrow a crane.
possible or impossible or marginal??

I would say possible, you would just have to jack the car up and take the g/box x member off.

Thats what im planning to do with the wagon, probably on the same weekend by the soudns of it!

If you raise the rear of the ute as high as safely & reasonably possible, & place protective material [blankets?] over possible contact pionts, then I think you can pull it off.

My personal preference is to mount the engine on the crossmember & lower the body onto it if you have the equipment to do it.

When fitting the 4AGZE to my car I lowered it with the Cressida box attached into the bay. Only had to take the gearlever and box's x-member of. The radiator wasn't in there either. A12 and box is much smaller, and should fit with ease.

I don't know if the ute is much smaller than the coupe - but with the coupe it is easier enough with everything attached including the gearbox crossmember.

i put the gearbox in after i put the engine in.

lets face it, putting the gearbox in a datsun is a fairly easy task. i got the splines lined up on the second "jiggle".

im not saying it can't be done with the gearbox on, but im saying it might take just as long (or longer) to get it in as 1 (without scratching you say) as it would to put them in seperately.

I agree with ronald. Any 'man' can put a 1200 gearbox on. The gearbox wont break your ribs if you rest it ontop of your chest during 'jiggles'.

The same is not true for a CA18 gearbox..I tried, and I almost broke a rib

Especially the A-seres, they can be leaned back a bit on the engine mounts, making gearbox fitment, quite easy.

It's easily possible to put an a12+box in, but you will very likely scratch up the firewall or front panel.

Do it in 2 steps.

I will put money on it that more scratches will happen if the box is put in second, on a manual tunnel 1200.

yepp, ive put a a series 4 speed in seperatly before, but how much heavier is the toyota box, taking into account im a 65kg greyhound.!
i dont have any front end in at the moment, so i can put the front as low as a few inches if i have to and jack up the back as much as i need.
my motive for doing it in one peice is that ill be doing it by myself, so there wont be a quick rescue if i get myself in a jam.
