#1 the car modifier in 20 years time
Ianey Posted on: 2007/10/25 5:56
Well with all the talk of climate change at the moment, I was wondering what it is going to mean for us: petrolheads.

I think it is established now that there is a real problem and that something needs to be done. Does that mean that we should all convert our cars to electric engines that run off windfarms? Or if we ride pushbikes during the week, does that mean we can blast around with twin webbers on the weekend?

Tim Flannery reckons that we need an 80% reduction by 2050, so do we fit into the 20% that is still allowed?

What do you reckon it means or do you not give a stuff?

I dont think it matters really, when the oil's gone its gone, I'm not gonna stop using my car just so some American can drive their F350 a bit more (sorry americans ).

There's some kick-ass electric cars about that I wouldn't mind driving to work each day...

LIKE THESE - 0-60 mph in 3.07 sec

Hey there ian,

Mate, i used to care about this sort of stuff. I studied landscape management and convervation at university for four years which was all about working out ways to manage human activity to minimise impact on the environment.

It encompassed all this type of stuff and i hate to be the bearer of bad news but all that study left me disillusioned.

Humans are doomed to destroy the earth, any way you look at it!!!

Wether we fix the oil issue or not, ther are thousands of other ways in which we are screwing this planet and the way our disgraceful political and economic systems work means that we are just delaying the inevitable.

I know it is a sadsack doom and gloom view but for years at uni, and even before that at school, i studied and thought about such issues and mate it's just the way it is, human beings will not survice another 500 years by my reckoning.

But don't worry, it won't be the death of the planet, it will survive, it's just us humans that are screwed. The planet will continue and life will continue but just without us.

So all the surfers have decided to do as everclear says and "swim out past the breakers, and watch the world die". So i am gonna combine that with "jumping in my datto and watching the world die as i fly!!!"

ethanol is a nenewable fuel - you can make it out of pretty much anything that grows in the ground, sugar cane, potatoes etc. internal combustion will be around a long time after im dead.

I don't think the car modifier will ever die out. It will just change in the way cars will be modified.
Example:
How low can you make your car hover from the ground. And maybe who has the quickest 0 - 100km/h acceleration hover speed. Or, what is your quickest speed in your hovercar.

the answer is simple, the method is not. We need to rape, uh, I mean "colonise" another planet where we can drive our Datto's

Trav- I'll second that. 4 years of Natural Resource Management.

Now working in renewable energy.

we're all screwed.

Ethanol is not even vaguely an answer the energy balance doen't add up. possibly when cellulaic butanol comes online.....

My money is on really boring road cars and a greater emphisis on track cars. Would serve 2 puroses, lower the road toll because the cars would be so lame that no one would bother thrashing them, and improve environmental outcomes.

The only loss would be to the ego's of young men.
