#1 datto1000wagon's 1k's and other cars
datto1000wagon Posted on: 2008/6/23 10:15
well i spose i probably should start a thread about my dattos so far ive only got 1k's but soon i should have a 320 ute
well back when i was at the young ripe age of 15 [in 2006] i was given my first datsun a 68 1000 wagon which was bought by my cousin who also loves his dattos. he had the intentions of a drag car but never got around to it so it ended up in my hands
first thing i had done was got it going when i did i thrashed it and and heaps of fun in it till my brother fried all the wiring so then i decided to strip it completly and got it sandblasted and sat around as i intended to do the body work this was going to be a bog job and quickly done it but i couldnt do that to it so after a lot of mucking around i took it into a family freind who happens to be a talented panelbeater and painter and slowly being beated and welded back to it former glory while i source parts for it.

basic plan for this wagon is an "orginal" looking wagon but will have slight modifications but not over the top with so that when the untrained eye looks at it they will think it is restored to it original condition
higlights will be

power plant, g,box, diff:
turbo a14 motor fuel injected, megasquirt computer, ford EDIS ignition system, slightly worked gx head, forged pistons, everything balanced and all this will be mated to a t50 toyota 5 speed gear box then into a h165

body:
shaved tailgate, large single rear window, coupe dash, no rear seat, custom grille, hidden intercooler, battery relocated and a few other mods

2nd wagon is being given a quick respray and getting ready for rego after it has had its duty as a daily it will be taken off the road and restored as an original granny spec wagon with a slightly higher powered a10

will post up pics asap

Ive been thinking for a while in removing the front stone tray and grille support setup as you have, drilling and taping a few holes to allow the front section to bolt on. Even in FRP to preserve my original. I remember having a 4wd reverse into me and I was driving a 543cc suzuki hatch then unbolting the whole front end apart and putting on another one. I thought what a revelation to have every little support and panel just bolt off and on. The thing is that itll make it too easy for the home repairer then wouldnt it so they stopped this practise by the release of the swift.

great age to get into the best datto of all youre a legend!
Like I said to you earlier I wished I went straight to datsuns from your age if I could go back 24 years.

Do you mean slightly worked a10 as having twin 40mm dellortos ?

i have been thinking of something like that! but most likley a gx head or a14 or a15 mild cam full balance job and then a single sidedraft dellorto or webber and extractors should be a bit of fun!

The strength of our small Datsuns is in the structure. This means that if it's welded in, then it's a structural member, including the welded dash panels in our B10's

If we start removing some previously welded panel, then bolt it in, we compromise the structure overall as we now rely on the friction between the bolted components to hold it all in place. When you realise just how thin some of those chassis members are, it becomes apparent that every part is a contributing element to the overall rigidity of the bodyshell.

In my case, instead of bolting bits in, I had the whole chassis seam welded, like they do in racecars, to maximise the structural ijntegrity & rigidity.

dodgeman i am having it so the coupe dash can bolt in and out but after you have said that i may weld a bar under there and out the way just to strengthen it back up

ok been a whiles since an update so heres one
recent addition to my collection of 1000's
a 4 door sedan completly shagged was sitting out in a paddock for over 10 years had a few good bits so i brought it home took me and j-dat a bit of effort to get it out cause it had been sitting without wheels for that 10 years and well corrosion is a bitch managed to get some wheels on it and drag it out the lower control arm snapped completly and it was intresting watching the trail of sparks down the 2km road from the leaf spring dragging

now im soon to pick up a local 1k coupe in the next week and hopefully another from canberra within a month
plans for these 2 gems is the local coupe to be a rally car sporting a twin sidedraught a15
the canberra coupe will have an a10 with gx head and su's then put on club rego hopefully
i have to much time
will edit the post with pics of the 4 dr when putfile stops screwing me around
