Topgear Posted on: 2008/7/6 14:08
How many litres/100 do most datsuns do?

Whats the best a std 1200 or 1000 will do...?
What experience have people had...?

the best I can muster so far was a 10.2 l\100km

I'm averaging about 12 to 13

I'm running an A15 at 12psi boost(14psi max) and am doing a lot of towing and hauling stuff with the ute...

Buggered if I know how many milk bottles of fuel my Datsuns consume per hour of freeway driving, but my B10 sedan with big bore GX engine was fueled up in Albury one night on a trip to Bendigo & we averaged over 72mph [116kph] for the 250 odd miles [402k] & it sipped the fuel at a rate of better than 42 mpg [68k/4.54609 litres]

On another occasion I 'drove for economy' from my place to Holbrook for the Ultralight Fly-in [1995] & it returned better than 51mpg [82k/4.54609 litres]

Remember that this is for Imperial gallons, not US gallons, which are 20% less & my engine was a near stock 1200 GX. This engine was running a 76.5mm bore as the only significant departure from standard. 5th gear was 1 to 1 & I used a 1200 diff of 3.9 to 1 ratio.
Rear tyre size was either 195x65x13 [583mm diameter] or 205x60x13 [575mm diameter] against the stock 600x12 size of 574mm

Mmmm... very interesting... So Dodgeman your saying that your getting between 5.5 to 6.7litres/100k's... Thats good now days let alone back 30 years ago when the cars where built...

I always wondered how many litres/100k's the old Datsuns used... I think if people where more aware of how good they are I think there value would possibly increase with the price of fuel now days...

i wonder if one day there will be a shortage of 'a' motors because everyone is fitting them into newer thirstier cars

Funny you say that....

Been thinking about fitting an A12 and 5 speed into a Series1 RX7 (better aero than early datsuns), removing everything heavy and unwanted to get the weight down (even fit 1200 diff with alloy 1000 centre)and perhaps fitting a water/hydrogen converter and see how many litres/100ks you'd get...?

If you got rid of everything heavy and unwanted from a series 1 RX7 you would be left with the motor and box!!

How is that 5 speed? I never even got to look at it.

since i finished my turbo setup i have hardly noticed any difference in fuel consumption. around town or on the highway. It would drink alot more if i let it though, but then you're always getting too much attention.

Need to bear in mind Datsuns were very light relative to today's cars of comparable size (maybe just 2/3~3/4 of today's weights). Around 40mpg (imp) should be easily do-able and 35mpg on sidedrafts etc if properly set-up.
