The cam vendor can tell you. Give them a call.

For standard clearance, use 0.013 inch cold.

my book says .010 cold, and .014 hot.

the cam would be causing it to be noisier

Yes the early Nissan book had it incorrect.

Quote:
From the 1973 Nissan Factory Service Manual:

COLD: 0.25 mm (13 thousands inch)
HOT: 0.35 mm (14 thousands inch)

NOTE: The 1971 manual has the cold specification incorrect.

Actually, I was quoting a my Haynes manual.

When they ground your cam they will have removed material from the base circle. That'll make your tappets noisey.

Yes, adjust them to spec. Even 2 thousands inch loose and they make tapping noises...

I'm Not sure about that one either. I've had a couple of cams reground, (lumpy nasty grinds) and the grinder's specs for tappet clearance have been .016. They haven't been noisy. On a really nasty motor the extra lash can allow the valve a whisker more "seat time" to aid heat transfer.

Yes, that's right. They should be adjusted to the cam grinder's specifications. For a stock camshaft, there should be absolutely no tappet noise (not even a faint little bit) if adjusted to Nissan's specifications.
