#1 New winged sump, baffles?
Mildman Posted on: 2008/10/6 13:15
Hey all - winged sump now in full prototype phase.

I was thinking of baffles on both sides of the wings to stop oil sloshing around, but that's about it.

Looks like this will add almost another 2L!

nice ben, do they make them for men????

lucky no speed humps on the track

i would baffle it before you finish it off.

add box to sump, drill holes thru original sump (baffled sump) sweet

i think he wants a hinged flap version if any.

The hole version works ok to for the budget racer

Are you saying my sump looks like a girl?

As for baffles the plan is now to cover maybe 75% of the wing with a baffle (no doors) and scallop it a bit to encourage the oil to stay in the middle....should work out alright I think.

If you are racing it on the track then I'd suggest building a box around the pickup (about an inch, or more if you can, clearance on all sides of the pickup) with hinged flaps (make sure you hinge them to swing inwards ), it might be a bit more work but the problem with just drilling holes or cutting scallops is they can slow the flow of oil to much and actually momentarily starve the pick up, especially on long sweepers. Also another thing to check is the distance between the pickup and the bottom of the new sump, if it is to high it can also cause momentary starvation. Just my two cents from personal experience.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll be looking into the hinged box, will test out the current baffles when I get it back (hold it up on a angle to represent 1.2G and see how the fluid flows).

A couple of other racers I know said with CA/RB oil degradation was more a of problem than momentary starvation - and sucking frothy oil was worse and more likely with the 3.5L of oil the CA holds....

I haven't seen it back yet from its second round.

moroso accumulators are the best thing since sliced bread
mate has one on a race car 20 seconds after shut off it still has 60psi oil pressure. you can see it working on the datalogger
