#1 Muffler replacement?
XCracer Posted on: 2009/6/16 4:39
Hey all,
on saturday i got a sports exhaust for my new datsun 120Y wagon, now i spoke to the guy on the phone and said to him im not worried about performance i just want it to sound like a beast... now when i picked it up i was instantly dissapointed in the noise but with previous experience they take a while to "carbon up" so i went with that and have run through half a tank of fuel since then (yes alot of driving) and it hasnt gotten any louder at all, now what im thinkin is that they have put a fairly restrictive muffler on, i spose they were thinkin that cause it only has one they better allow for that and put a restrictive one on so its not too loud..

so my question is, should i be charged for them changing over to a less restrictive muffler??? it has only been 3 days and id say they would resell my muffler as brand new.. so if i call them up should i fight for free or accept a small fee and be done with it??

if everything else is stock, especially the very thin exhaust piping u wont get that much of a good sound anyway. Lukey has the best trademark growl, get it changed if u really want it louder, just dont have a chrome cannon under the back bumper.

well before i took it to the exhaust shop we cut the exhaust off just before the back seat.. (before the muffler) and it was freakin loud... now with a 2" pipe and "sports Muffler" it is back to JUST JUST JUST louder than stock.. i think i prefer stock..

Griffo,
Since your in the know, what's your recommendation for a A14 with a stock manifold? I was thinking of a 2 inch with sports exhaust for mine to replace the stock A12?

how much do u wanna spend...if money isnt an issue get a mandrel bent 2 inch with one baffled muffler rite at the back of the if possible i no theres not lots of room but if you cant get one in there just put one in the stock spot in front of the diff...i would really be investing in a decent set of extractors eg 4 into 1s that setup with extractors is wat i have sounds very nice indeed but my muffler is a round baffled one squeezed up inbetween the spring hanger and the boot floor sits down a bit lower though but looks good
if u wanna do it cheap a press bent 2 inch with a baffled muffler in stock spot will sound better but without extractors it wont sound as good
reason for the muffler as far back as possible is to reduce the resonese in the pipe (burble that datsuns have)
my extractors are hi-tech they are 4 into 1s flame proofed mine are stainless but can get a steel set the same steel ones retail at around 220
i then chopped mine up and made them tuned length(much better)
dont get straight through or a cannon or just a hot dog type muffler(sound #OOPS#)
