#1 Weight of bare shell, anyone know?
Rallytwit Posted on: 2010/7/21 2:29
I know it seems absurd but as I'm compiling a list of component weights for the 1200 coupe (it's bordering on Nerdum) I was curious if anyone ever weighed a bare shell?? I'm looking to be able to factor what the final weight of a car would be based on all the various options. I've started loading weights onto a spreadsheet......................it's been 112 degrees in Vegas so let's just say I've not been in the garage to much the past few weeks............and I can only mess with the model trains so much

I can't help you with a body shell weight unfortunately but I commend you on making that spreadsheet and would be very interested in your findings. I have only ever weigh
ed my coupe complete so would love to know where the weight comes from.
Who cares if it's a bit nerdy, we're all a bit that way. I'd be more worried about the train set if i were you!

Had a shell a while ago without a floor and 2 could lift and carry it around easily. With a floorpan I am guessing 80 to 90 kg (unsure what that is in american though).
Cheers
Bob

took 2 people to lift my bare wagon...mainly due to the length of it

if i could balance it on one point it could weight it for you lol

I would put the weight at around 300 lb. In 1982 when I built the green car we stripped it completely and had it dipped to remove all paint and rust. (Not acid dipped, just caustic solution to remove all the gunk) The metal was still the stock thickness. We did weigh it and I don't recall the exact number but as was mentioned by bob it was particularly easy for my friend and I to carry it around.

NZDatman.............if you think 35 GX exhaust manifolds are worth some coin you should see the crazy prices for 55 yr old Lionel Trains (fortunately they were gifted to me). I'm into all manor of motorized things, when I was a kid we visited some narrow gauge railways. Steam Locomotives are pretty awesome, nothin like rolling on 60 inch wheels. I'm also looking to putting some slot cars in the garage mahal....................nothing like sitting in the garage listening to 70's Punk and playing with toy cars.

As for the Shell weight I was figuring between 300-400lbs. Bare metal 300lbs sounded about right, there must be 40lbs of undercoating and paint has to be near 20lbs.
