#1 what paint to use for restoring alloy rims?
datsunbeginner Posted on: 2010/8/16 12:03
Hey guys I am currently restoring some alloy rims myself that I bought from a fellow aussie datsun owner (could even be a member on here) last week. Not looking to have them professionally done because I am on a budget. So far I've spent 8 hours degreasing, power washing, wire brushing, and hand sanding every nook and cranny of the wheels by hand. I haven't got the wheels down to bare aluminium, but I think they are ready for paint. I've noticed some other members on here have painted their rims but no one has really recommended a spray paint brand to use. The guy I bought the rims from told me to use Killrust epoxy gloss enamel so I bought two cans of gloss black and two cans of Killrust etch primer to go on first. I haven't painted them yet because a few of my mates recommended I use engine paint or something that can withstand high temps because of braking. After researching on google loads of people seem to use DupliColor Wheel Paint for their rims but not sure if its sold in australia. So what do you guys reckon? Will Killrust do a good job?

Duplicolor is sold at most major autoparts stores in WA.

you can use anything really...2pac, acrylic, powerder coat it, or enamel eithere way you have to prep the rims first. Make sure they are clean before painting, but when painting alloy rims you will need an ally primer so that it sticks properly and not peel off after a few weeks

Just wondering if anyone has used Killrust before and if so how is it holding up? I've got the Killrust Etch Primer and Killrust Gloss Black ready to go on this weekend.

Killrust paint is OK should work, best ever paint has always been VHT in Spray cans, paint on a warm day or carefully heat the cans till warm in hot water for a much better spray pattern and smoother coverage, light coats to build up color and practise and a heavier coat to get a smooth gloss finish coat.

defiantly agree with coxsteve ^^^ always heat your cans in the sunny or hot water (:

finally finished my wheels...if I had to do it again i would probably use another paint product. The killrust didn't give as smooth a finish as I wanted but it still looks good. Had trouble on the first coat, it bubbled everywhere so I had to re-sand. I am pretty sure it was because I used a primer even though the can said it wasn't needed.

i used killrust etch primer since the rims are aluminium. dunno why the two didn't work well. i would skip the primer next time

if you used killrust primer it should have worked fine

but killrust doesnt really need primer, painted many alloy things with killrust before and its turned out pretty good
