adding SUs won't give you much more power. A simple turbo setup at 5 psi and no intercooler will provide more power.
To get the advantage of the twin Hitachi carburetors, you need to change the head, camshaft, pistons and exhaust. And then keep the engine revved up to around 6000 rpm. Or just fit a stocker A14 to get around the same performance.

A stock A14 should give you some extra go.
An ag turbo setup. ie j-pipe setup. no intercooler. If you are handy with a welder, i reckon you could hack something up in an day. Half a dozen hose clamps, a few silicone elbows. just remember. Cheap, realible, powerful. You can only pick two... I just chucked j-pipe into the fast search bar and got this. 1200RC setup

As Sean (whitesedan) put it:
Quote: cheap + fast = disaster A14 is your best trouble free, low cost power improvement. Turbo will bring jetting drama's and need a fair bit of work. Find an A14/15 to drop in and work on the turbo A12 when it is out and about.

I would say stick with the a12 turbo and change your diff ratio down to 3.9.
That way you wont need a 5 speed. An a14 has longer stroke and gets noisier at 100kmh than an a12.

I do infact have a good turbo setup that came from a 1200 for sale, although i suspect it may be a little out of your price range, judging from you initial intent.
Includes Rebuilt CA18 turbo External wastegate (Streetsmart 38) exhaust manifold to suit both. intake manifold with injector bosses and injectors (ca18 reconditioned) ca18 throttle body. PM me if you are keen and we can talk. You can view topic.
