I;ve had a steering box query for ages.
Where the adjustor screw contacts the back of the sector shaft, what is used where the two parts touch? Does it have like a nylon rubbing block or what? I only ask cos when I built my car, I wound that screw in a very long way. It tightened up my steering heaps! and made the car really positive to steer. But once it's out of adjustment, is that the end of the steering box? I have my doubts about the teeth inside it being bale to wear enough for it to have needed as much adjustment as it took. And I was surmising that perhaps it's more a case of whatever is between the screw and the sector shaft wearing instead. In the exploded drawing, it doesn't name that part. And I figure my question is relevent to this thread.

The adjustor screw just meshes the two gears. When it wears out you throw the box away. But they last a long time as long as you don't overtighten the adjuster (it needs a tiny bit o' slack).

When I rebuilt mine I noticed that when adjusted right, the steering arm would be snug in the centre but off to the left or right it would wiggle with play, my guess was that feedback into the steering wheel around corners would wear the rack unevenly - more than the centre (because the centre part is only used on straight roads)?

so if I make a longer screw, it can keep on adjusting the steering box forever?

Yes. Although t some point the sector & worm will be worn down and so you won't be able to turn it past the center easily.
