#1 Adelaide: Pollution control help
Stefano Posted on: 2011/11/1 5:21
Hey guys

So I took blue devil to get regoed this afternoon and the nice rego people were most upset that I had replaced the odometer and asked me to write a letter to their friends at consumer affairs to get special permission (apparently retrospectively to do this) and then make the nice trip out to Regency Park again.

They were also very upset that my weber carby didn't have any pollution control gear hooked up (it's an 85 model and apparently mandatory after 70something). So I am after a stock A-series carby WITH all of the pollution stuff intact that I can swap over to get through rego. Is anyone able to help?

Cheers
Stefan

I'd offer some help but I'm in my last week of uni so very busy indeed. If it was next weekend I could help out.

What it sounds like is that you don't have your PCV return in place, meaning the crank case ventilation and rocker cover ventilation are venting to atmosphere or simply capped with a filter or catch can.

If you were to install the stock components of the A12 of the car's era I think you'd end up with just a PCV return cycle system as the anti-pollution gear of that time.

Is there an option to plumb the return with the current weber carburetor? Or are they wanting to see the stock setup back on it?

What is the current setup and do you have pictures? If I were you I'd just plumb everything so that the crankcase and rocker fumes cycle back through the induction so the harmful fumes are cycled back through for a burn and emitted as slightly more friendly fumes. That is all the stock setup was, in terms of anti-pollution. If you have the stock inlet manifold then that should have a pcv valve on it, you just run a pipe from the rocker cover vent T-piece'd to a hose from the crankcase breather and then the final outlet of the t-piece is connected by a third hose to the PCV valve, this should work okay and suit their requests just fine.

If you want the quickest solution (and assuming you have nothing available) you may want to dash down to u-pull-it wreckers for some stock manifolds and gear. I had a spare A12 runner but gave that to another Adelaide member.

Thanks for the advice Chris. I reckon you're right, they just want to see a closed cycle system rather than what I've got now (air filter coming off the rocker and everything else blocked off).

It will prob be a week or two before i can take another day off to run the gauntlet again, so if you've got some time when you've finished uni that would be awesome.

do as chris says, whos to know if the return pipe with pcv goes into the manifold or is just attached to a bolt on the manifold whilst in regengy ????

Sounds good. I have this week to finish, hand in on Tuesday then presentations wednesday thursday friday. Should be good for a weekend thing. If I get a chance to do something this weekend I'll let you know. PM me your number and whereabouts I'll call you if I can manage a spare few hours - I'm in Wynn Vale/Golden Grove.

Ok do not block the crankcase ventilation, needs to breathe if it pressurises it might start spewing oil. Same thing with the rocker breather, if you block it it'll start spewing oil out the gasket and all over the place (this depends on how much blow-by you have though). If you are just venting to atmosphere some people have actually passed that (might be to do with manufacture dates though can't remember) so you may have been unlucky. I've always found the regency guys to be really helpful.

Did you go for a roadworthy or just identity check?

In the meantime there are a couple of other members around the place that might (hopefully) be able to help you sooner- they don;t get on-line much though.

Cruise coming up by the way, so good timing.

So here are some pics of my current setup. If I can just connect up the blocked off stuff like you guys suggest that would be great. I don't really know what needs to go where though - I have labelled the blocked off pipes for easy reference. I guess plan B is buy a manifold/carby with all the stuff still on it and just swap it over for rego - I found one at a wreckers but they want $$$ as it is an oval port manifold.

1,2 you can lOop back onto itself.

4 can go to anoter 4 and 5 needs to go into carby base- there should be a hole with a plug on it. Just drill one and get a plastic hard ware shop plastic fitting for hose connectors.

6 looks like an elec choke so that shouldn't fail regency

The only plug at the base of the manifold for 5 to go in to comes out right next to the extractors, just a few mm away (just below 1 in the first pic). If you put a hose on it, it would burn off in no time...

Only has to get over pit- can you wrap it in heat proof tape or similar. There has to be another pipe some where.

Could you get some copper pipe and make a extension to get the hose further away from extractors
