#1 How do you guys get traction with high hp? And awd anyone?

Contemplating selling my datsun 260z with turbo v8 for multiple reason.
Im thinking of getting a 1200 coupe but was worried about traction issues.

My car now could not get traction with 275 and even with 325/35r15 it still break loose when boost kicks it in 1st and 2nd. Car is just too light at 400whp

So with a 1200 sunny with ca18det @ 350-400whp I don't see it getting any traction with a tiny 195 tire. So what are your secret? Even with 225 I don't see it happening.


Which brings me to my other brainstorming.
Awd 1200. I saw the post where people suggested gtir but I have not seen those for sale so that's out. I'm thinking of using 1g dsm set up. Anyone have one running? I couldn't find one with a running setup in a coupe.

I am well aware that the wheelbase and track width is different but only by a few inches. Nothing a flare and shortening driveshaft can't fix. But I don't think I can tackle this without more info that I found. Which is practically none.

Any input would be nice thanks

Ops forgot to add that. This is 99.99% street car. My daily driven car. I do back road drags and this comming season I may do acouple of track 1/4 runs.
So no slicks. I do run drag radials 100%. but always switch out to all season during rainy season.

sounds like a monster street car!, what is 1g dsm?

quite a few people upgrade the rear end to 4 link, there's been a few mid-mount projects over the years too (though never seen great detail on these)

haven't known any 4wd conversions, would be awesome, maybe something like a mazda familia drivetrain could work?

obviosly tyres and suspension components are the crucial bits to traction, if you spend enough money on these two things then i guess your going to get the maximum traction possible

in going for a 1200 your pretty much going for the lightest rwd with sensible suspension, and the less weight you have the less traction you will need

1g dsm are the early model eclipse/laser/talons.
If I remember right they are 90-94 models.
They have an awd/turbo version.

Do you remember if the back seat was lost with mid mount?

Ya I was hoping someone has done it. Got a new garage so i got room to build something that can be apart for some time lol

I'm not familiar with any Mazda besides the rx7. Any of the awd have a close enought track/wheelbase?

And yea but unfortunately once you pass a certain whp no skinny tires is going to grab. Unless I'm missing something here. But a ca18det full upgrade with FMIC, bigger turbo will make this car front heavy if it isn't already so weight transfer wouldn't be very good.

There was that south African rally car which had Mitsubishi eve running gear but was basically a 1200 coupe on an evo .

If traction an issue then a stock ish ca with 250 hp should be ok for street and still be quick.

Your better off modding body fir wider wheels and Tyres than awd IMHO

I wonder how much it weight, I'll see if I can find that.

But that's what I was thinking at first, drop a shell over the 1g dsm, but I think the weight will go up significantly into the 2500? Maybe?I if thats the case I wouldn't be happy with the weight for that much work since a race weight 1g can be lightened to 2700 with removing stuff and zero major fab.

If I can get it done and be under 2000 that be awesome.

Ya it is but I'm tired of staggered set up and wide tires on this won't look to good, not mention wide tires in small rims are rare or expensive.

there was an awd turbo mazda about the same era as the awd turbo lasers.
a mazda familia.
bout the size of a laser.
probably the smallest mazda awd made.
even suzuki swift came as an awd turbo. called a cultus.

Yeah but east west engines- the mazdas had notoriously weak gearboxes- I had onebefore I got my first datsun. Cultus is getting rare too.

Heaps of kei car options from Japan but 660cc turbo awd is not what he Wants power wise I'm sure.

Toyota caldina is great- 206kwstock 3sgte awd. Doubt it will fit 1200 though.

Alot of guys have great results with mild ca's and srs in rwd. Awd won't Be a magic answer for traction in a light shell for traction.

If suspension sorted well enough should have no troubles with rwd and cheaper and easier to fix

In my opinion, around 300rwhp is the right amount for a lightweight street car.

280-320 will give you say 115-120mph in most small cars which is wickedly fast but still useable on the road with a 205-225 semi slick tyre.

The only way to put more power down, is get a bigger car and bigger tyre. I have been in a couple of 600rwhp+ supras and they hook up very well.

An auto will also help traction greatly, in most cars.
