#1 Datsun 1600 wagon diff into 1200?
cadet1200 Posted on: 2011/11/20 10:19
I have recently aquired a H190 diff from a 1600 wagon and am thinking about using it in my ute. I know it has been done before as there was a neat SR20 powered ute from Seaford with one in years ago. Just wondering whether anyone on here has this setup? Couldn't see anything in the Wiki. Did the H190 LSD come out in any factory nissan? What would be the easiest disc brake conversion (R31, Series 3 Bluebird?).

I measured it up against the standard ute diff and it's about 20mm wider each side (40mm total)so should be able to get away without needing any shortening.

why had I not remembered this diff... Wanna sell it lol. Can you get accurate measure from outside flanges at end of axle tube for me please, this could be just what I need for better wheels, will reply with more info for you when not on my phone

the diff will need the mounts moved (possibly changed to 165 ones)

you can fit bluebird disc over drums from series 2+3+TRX blueys

will need to make a small bracket for handbrake cable and if you go discs there is a little mucking around with hydraulic lines

only real LSD option is to source a Topgear one from the first batch he did (technically some blueys came with lsd but being 35yo and i havent heard of one existing for ages it's not really an option)

i am running the vanette 190 in my road car with bluey discs, its big but it fits, that is from memory 90mm wider (45 each side)

i also have a topgear lsd which im planning to put in

but id like a skinnier version to allow different and fatter wheels

if you wanna sell or someone reading this has one i am keen!

only thing i am unsure of is spline counts on axles, would need to do some research before doing centre swaps or anything as there is a couple of different splines in H190s

Michael...Thanks for the additional info. Have also found some detail on the Martybugs 1200 conversion site.

Just measured from flange to flange and it's 1220mm. Hope that helps.

The springs are 60mm wide as opposed to the 1200's which are 50mm wide, however the centre of the spring perches seems to be identical. So I'm hoping I can just weld a piece of plate with the correct size hole in it (as the 1600's is way to big) for the 1200's locating bolt and then use the rest of the 1200's U-bolts and shocker plates.

Mind you my plan is to get engineered with standard diff and not worry about upgrading till it breaks.

Nismo 2011 catalog lists the LSD unit for H190.

Rear Axle Swaps

510, 610,710 station wagon (Davo_1200's 1200 used this diff).

from that info and what i have here then:

1200 h145 + h165 = 1195
1600 wagon h190 = 1220
vanette h190 = 1280
bluey h190 = 1325

1600 wagon h190 has thin axles, 23 spline if i remember correctly, they do/can twist, I have seen it when I used one in my webered, L series 1200 coupe years ago..

they are the same spline as h165.

Realy, ill ive read says the 190 is rated upto 140 lbs of torque, while 165 is about 100-110 torque?

I'm disappointed to hear that the axles are no stronger than my H165. Probably have more problems trying to locate a spare axle for the 1600 diff if I did break one too!

Mind you the SR20DET ute I knew of was driven pretty hard and never broke the axle/diff.

Id be more worried about braking the ring, pinion or side gears then the axles, ive broke 2 65's, not the axles tho.
even when I was slammin 140rwhp around like a mother I broke spiders and rings. Did the same to my gslse rear too.
