okay I've checked the tech wiki and I've done a search nothing has come up.
im wanting to know the differences between the two, on the strut alone. As I've got a pair of 120y struts on my ute atm and from what I've been told 1200 struts.

pretty sure 1200 coupe and early/jap 120y struts are the same
the main difference between 1200 sedan wagon and ute struts compared to 120y ones is that 1200s use drums and 120ys use discs

There are two kinds of 120Y struts and at least two kinds of 1200 struts. The four kinds do not interchange.

Is there an easy way to identify which ones you have? I am in the same position here, having almost run out of brakes on the struts in my ute, and I have no idea what to ask for when I order new brake discs.

Sure, the easy way is to clean the tube and read the Nissan part number stamped on each tube. Then search for that part number using the search box.
The biggest difference is drum-brake strut versus disc-brake strut. 1973-1975 build 120Y uses same struts as B110 (available in drum or disc type). Later 120Y might differ. 1200 Ute used 5 different struts over the years. The first four might interchange, but the last one was totally different.

Yes, there are differences. Which struts do you have? What is the part number?

If you need new pads, get the part number off them and order the pads, that should be able to cross reference rotors or drums too
