#1 Wheels and tyres
1200rallycar Posted on: 2002/4/15 4:35
i just put some toyota tarago mags (14"*5.5") on my 1200 coupe and the barstard at the tyre place convinced me 185/65/14 tyres would fit even though i said i wanted 195/60/14, after i took them home and chased up the right nuts to fit the wheels i put em on and couldnt even turn out of my own street. the tyres were cut and he wouldnt take em back. im wondering about the legalities of cutting or bending the front of the wheel arch down the bottom there in specific with regards to rallying (and maybe bashing in the back wall behind the tyre cause that rubs too). what size tyres is anyone else running with there 14s or 15s or whatever you got?. Also i had to put the stanza struts i had on to fit the wheels as the tyres rubbed on the 1200 struts but the tyres also hang outside the gaurd aswell so how does anyone get big wheels to fit in without flares?. i wanted to get the wheels machined to have less offset and bring them inside the gaurds so they didnt hit the top of the arch but theres still only abut 12-15mm (just over 1/2 inch) clearance between the strut and tyre even with the stanza struts in? any suggestions appreciated, id really prefer to stay on 14s for road use but looks like 13" is biggest with rally tyres on (probably better for ratios anyway). The 14s look way too good on the coupe to let them go it makes it look soooooooooo sweet and the ones i got are a damn nice pattern.

my1200 ute runs stanza struts with either 1600 or 180b discs and calipers. wheels are celica 14*5.5 &195/60/14's all round. There's about 3mm between tyre and strut. In relation to hight the top of the tyre is just inside of the wheel arch with good clearance between the tyre and the inside of the wheel arch. It only rubs inside the lower front floot on full lock going down a kerb. 185/65s are quite a bit taller.A 60 series tyre would be a better option.

i have roh 16 by 6's chicane wheels on mine with 205 45s before that i had 14inch hustlers with big 255s on the rear ,i found the floor is a complete p#$k of a thing to clear and had to carefully modify had with a bloody big hammer to make them fit, also as you pointed out the front of the guard does need cutting and rolling to clear, the tops of the guards will need to be pulled out to clear other wise when you are pulling up fast or hit a big bump they will hit even with reeaally heavy springs, mine took alot of panel beating because i like having my wheels neatly tucked level with the guards, also good sway bars (front and rear) do help alot here because the car swats instead of leans ,and also handles better . with all of that and extra leaves i can sqeeze 5 big people two huge motherf@#$ng alpine v12s three 15inch subs and the weight if the rollcage and the wheels still only scrape a tad on the floor going over steep gutters on wierd angles. ps i have sunny front stuts with a little extra camber. pps our roads suck . ppps.sorry i ramble on to much

I agree with the other guys.
Most 14x 5.5 or 6 inch with 185 or 195/60's will fit.

The offset is the real killer in a 1200 installation.

I tried fitting my bro's 16x7 simmons with 205/45's on my 1200, the back fits fine, but the front doesn't, it hangs out the guards and hits badly on the front of the guard.

Due to my commodore/verada front brake install, I can't use anything smaller than a magwheel 14inch. Standard 14inch wheels hit on the caliper.

Looks like 15 or 16x6 with 195/45's will be the choice. Not cheap unfortunately. Still might need rolling the edge at the front of guard. The offset may also need to be customised to fit.
