I had to replace the unis in my coupes tailshaft took it to Gibbs trucks on the gold coast and as soon as I walked in the guy said (a Datsun 1200 shaft yes) bloody amasing. The bad news is they cannot replace the unis they would have to build a complete new shaft(between a rock and a hard place) so I faulked out my wait for it......$515.and I now have a new shaft front to rear that has replacable joins that should outlast me as the old one was 40 years old .GREG.

Good quality cost a bit, but will be worth it over the long run.

Interesting, I didn't know they couldn't be rebuilt.
Hope my ute shaft fits the sedan.. because I know my sedan one is stuffed. Cheers Ed

They can be rebuilt, early ones completely, later staked-in types by using non-standard u-joints. See our Universal Joint article for details.

DD I know Rockford do unis in America but you try finding someone in Australia that has the knowlage and the interest to repair them, all the oldschool guys are gone that I new that were capable of that sort of repair. So we are all stuck with having to get complete new shafts made
PS I have many more tailshafts in the shed that need repair all out of different dattos.

There's a few vids on you-tube specifically about how to remove staked in uni joints and how to fit a new 'replaceable' uni joint. It's not that hard (though I must confess I haven't personally done it specifically on a datsun tailshaft. But as mentioned in this thread, the challenge isn't necessarily 'how to' get the old ones out, it's more a case of sourcing the right uni joints to put in to replace em with.
