#1 Just some quick camshaft questions for my A15
loosekid Posted on: 2014/1/7 3:14
Hey boy's and girls just need a quick hand last week i gave the boy's at qbn engine services my A15 to get all sorted for my 70 thou over bore forgies and machine port and polish my head and as im doing it im swapping the cam now i only have a couple simple queries

One being what does everyone recommend a good brand and many people have used it..

Tomei would be something i would like to run but so expensive $900 odd + postage but then i go look at the other end of the scale at Auckland cams $125 or wade cams australia

Why are the cam's so cheap from Auckland cams??

Now with the new setup im wanting around a 296 - 304 duration cam with 7 - 7.5 lift as the new displacement comp ratio, twin webber's double valve springs ect.. will be where i want it up to around 7000rpm mark good for street as well as some little hill climb and gymkahna events

My next question is are these cam's generally late model cam's??

Where is the best place to get good lifter's for reasonable pricing..??

here are some examples as what i am looking at
NISSAN DATSUN A12-A15 59 MECH STAGE 5 234/234 279/279 293/293 1.5 439/439 108 NZ$125.00 plus gst Lopey idle. Increased mid to top end power. Needs increased comp ratio, springs and twin carbs. 3500-6800rpm

Tomei Procams Set Nissan A12/A14/A15 304-7.00mm

For some reason the tomei procam on ebay comes as a set

I hear good things about Kennelly (spelling) cams in Christchurch.
Stuff is cheaper here cos our wages are sh1t. Pay people less, services cost less.
There's also Franklin cams in Auckland too.

I just recently got my a12 cam reground at wade cams

i got the 446 grind has plenty of power till 6000rpm but start to drop off as i think my single weber downdraught isnt enough will be going to r1 bike carbs when i find some

it cost me $140 to get the cam reground and tappets refaced

i also got dual valve springs from http://www.performancesprings.com.au/valvesprings.html

cost $120 i think

i would give wade cams a go they provide excellent service

I do not recommend the performance springs CB4A02's.
I used to run them, but mine lost their extra pressure, and two of my mates had them break on daily driven cars. A local Cam shop no longer even stocks them. And they told my mate they were only good for 20,00kms
Or replace every season in a track car.

Plus they aren't needed for 6000 rpm use.

Just a quick query as well boy's/girls where have people got their new pushrods from for the new camshaft?? or is it needed to change the pushrods if the base circle is smaller or is it needed with the lift with the A series not doing it before im just curious weather the pushrods will need to be shortened for correct valve lash

What is recommended?

We use cut-to-length pushrods.

I'd say that Kelford cams in Christchurch would likely be regarded the best in NZ. From memory a few hundred $ including cam regrinding and refacing followers, which is a must. They'd also suggest a grind to suit.
Pushrods: if anything they'd theoretically want to be shorter after regrinding the cam, however, this is rarely required in practice. Also, assuming you also plane the head to increase compression, this goes some way to compensating for the reduced cam base circle.
Having said all this, I'm sure there will be well-reputed cam shops in Oz.

I shouldn't trash Kelfords. (I have a mate who works there) But they rub me up the wrong way.
Hey Fandatstick,
Are you on NZdatsun.com?
