#1 need some advice on putting L18 in 1200 ute
Matto1kUte Posted on: 2014/7/30 21:35
Hey guys need some advice. Just in the middle of putting a some sort of worked L18 in my 1200 ute lol. Its an unknown motor. Ran well (aparently) has twin 40mm dellortos, lightend flywheel, some sort of cam and extractors. Ive mounted it on my crossmember lower enough that it fits under my bonnet. From what ive read I need to panel beat the trans tunnel a little but how much? Im using a stanza 5 speed dogleg stumpy box that has the crossmember modded to suit a 1600(510).

as much as you need to make it fit...
depends on exactly where you have mounted the engine. this is how much I had to massage the start of the tunnel in my old 1200

you'll probably also need to remove the gearbox mounting brackets from the tunnel

The only down side (not the end of the world) i found to using standard tunnel and mine was an auto was the amount of frigging around i had to do to get the gearbox off the engine in the car was nearly more of a waste of time than just pulling engine and box out together. I used a stumpy box and had L16 stanza motor. At the least i would recommend cutting out and welding in a bigger section around the area the bellhousing is located for easy access to gearbox bolts. That said its your car and it will work as is with minor tweaks just dont expect to have much knuckles left if you need to remove the box.

I'll second Datsandy on his response.

I had an L20 in mine with an dr30 stumpy box. Now got the same box on my ca18.
A clutch job is a motor out affair for me.

Next time I'll be making the tunnel wider.

I have the A-Series in my car pushed back close to 50mm in my car, in order to undo the tranny I undo the motor mounts and then pull the motor forward as well as lowering it down to get access to the bolts. This saves having to undo everything else. Takes me about 10 extra minutes. Much nicer than pulling the whole engine.
