#1 Smoothing the flow, A15 factory manifold
58custom Posted on: 2015/1/25 4:20
Folks,

I am using an H95 exhaust manifold on the A15 in my Midget. This manifold uses a bubble flare with no seal or gasket and the three bolt collar clamp. metal to metal. I don't like this manifold to pipe joint because the flare end of the pipe has a 1.5" (38mm) inside diameter and because the flare has an overage of pipe that extends about an inch into the manifold. This is not a smooth transition in the least.

The manifold flange is chamfered and it looks like I might be able to maybe adapt an ordinary flare with a donut or maybe something more ball-like. Or maybe something else? I'd like to know how I can smooth this transition for better flow.

Hi Tom,
I see you on both my favourite sites, this one and the MGexp..

I cant answer your question directly, but here is a photo of what i use on my spridget/datsun combination....
Not sure where it came from, suspect it was made by a local exhaust place...

Weld a flange onto the end of the exhaust pipe, its the most straightforward way.

Two of the best forums. That looks like a nice modded header. I have a 1600 header and a set of A15 exhasu flanges but Idl like to see if I can't make the stock stuff work.

So you think a flange and a donut will work OK? It would certainly be smoother.

Yeah would work fine. And better than the said inserted extra. I'm pretty sure the factory pipe ends have a radiused flare so that it seals to the chamfered edge pictured above.

I did mine recently and rolled a small ring and welded that to the pipe-end to replicate the radiused flare.
