I don't know what he's using on that custom engine. But in general, CPS uses a magnetic sensor or an optical sensor (e.g. Nissan Optical CAS).
The sensor here is a magnetic type. The third wire suggests it has an amplifier built-in making it a hall-effect subtype. ![]() Because it is a single sensor, it can only detect one thing (e.g. Cam Position or Crank Angle, but not both). combo unit - Crank Angle Sensor/Cam Position Sensor * Mazda B engines used either magnetic version Combo sensor or mitsubishi Optical version ![]() These are fitted on the back of the cylinder head on Miatas.

Correction, apparently on Miatas, the single sensor is per Mazda a "CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR". The combo unit per Mazda is a "CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR".
Not sure why Mazda would use both, but they do. If you use a Haltech or a Megasquirt ECU, the combo unit is all you need. 18230 SENSOR, CRANKSHAFT POSI. NO.1 18230 SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSI. NO.2. Mazda parts ![]()

Ah, two sensors were only used 1996-1997.
this is interesting: Quote: '96 to '97... The fact that Mazda called them both a CPS was not helpful. You can view topic.
